2020 Trench Safety Stand Down June 15-19, 2020
Each year, OSHA complies its list of the "Fatal Four" hazards on construction sites resulting in a majority of construction worker deaths. In 2018 caught-in/between hazards, which include construction workers killed when caught-in or compressed by equipment or objects, and struck, caught, or crushed in collapsing structure, equipment, or material, resulted in 55 fatalities, or 5.5% of construction worker deaths.
Per the National Utility Contractors Association, the "goal of the stand down is to reach out to the many workers who work in and around trenches and excavations to provide them with information about current excavation requirements and safety procedures for working in trenches. By reaching as many workers as possible we can reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries that occur each year in our industry, and make others, such as municipal and industry workers who are also exposed, aware of these serious hazards."
To that end here are links to OSHA and NUCA web pages with various resources that you can use to train employees on trenching and excavation hazards and how to protect themselves.
For participants in the 2020 TSSD (June 15-19, 2020), NUCA will provide a Certificate of Participation which will be mailed to all participating companies by the end of July 2020. NUCA will publish the list of names of participating organizations on the NUCA website and in its printed publications. Click on this link to the Trench Safety Stand Down Completion Form.
